Ghost hunting and picnicking and money!

Have you ever thought, "I would love to pay for the pleasure of Lauren's company and at the same time support local theater"? HERE'S YOUR CHANCE! My improv home, HUGE Theater, is conducting their annual fundraising hangout auction. The stuff you can bid on is LITRALLY hanging out with improv people WHAT. All you need is an eBay account, which I know you use mostly for trying to find obscure Saved by the Bell memorabilia. So this time use it to help somebody for once in your goddamn life, okay? I've got two horses in this race to enjoyment:

Will we meet a transparent nightgown lady?
MAYBE!
Ghost Hunting Adventure with Sally Foster & Lauren Chesnut! Guys, you know how I'm obsessed with ghost shows? Now's your chance to see me doing my best GhostBro impression. I've insisted on being billed as a "paranormal scholar," but Sally's actual done ghost hunting before and will bring equipment and it's going to be creepy fun! For up to five people.

Snack time with Snack Time! Just what it sounds like. You and up to two companions can join Minneapolis' premier snack food-based improv cult on a picnic. We are fun! And loud! And will bring piles and piles of snacks!

Here's all the items for sale. All auctions close Tuesday, April 14 at 10:59 p.m., so get your bids in. It should go without saying, but you have to be in the Twin Cities to collect on your hangout if you win.

If these auctions are too rich for your blood and/or you don't live in Minnesota and thus have to be denied the presence of our charms, you can always benefit HUGE by buying whatever shit you were going to buy anyway on Amazon by using smile.amazon.com and selecting "HUGE Improv Theater" as your charity. It costs you nothing extra, but Amazon will kick a little change in our direction.

And here's a reminder that my group Trust Pit is performing our original form The Reconstruction (not this Reconstruction) at 8:00 p.m. Fridays through the end of the month. Tickets!

You guys are the best. I mean that. I really hope we can buy a new rug for the green room. Now get bidding!

Bitches be opining about rape jokes

I did stand-up once two years ago. It's time I weighed in.
Have you guys been following the minute details of the most recent dudes defending their right to "joke" about rape controversy? Because I read all the ladyblogs and have a bit of a vested interest in "not hating women" and also "comedy" and made the mistake of reading comments sections on some of these articles, I have presented more than one impassioned argument to my husband while drinking and working on a jigsaw puzzle in front of the TV about this. Since things are still happening, I guess I'll finally get around to writing about it, too.

Previously on Feminists vs. Douchebags:

May 4: Awesomely awesome Sady Doyle went to a comedy show. She is a funny lady who also enjoys other funny people! However, in a sadly unsurprising turn of events, one of the dudely openers told a series of HILARIOUS jokes about women that were unfunny and sexist and also some of the punchlines were, "I raped her." HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA I don't think I can stop laughing, it is so funny to rape people chicks, amirite, bros? Anyway, Sady tried to engage with this comic about why he thinks that's okay. Does he not realize that his audiences inevitably include rape survivors? Though originally eager, once he realized what she really wanted to talk about, he was not so forthcoming. And so Sady published her piece and then he and his fans and other dudecomics got all upset about her "attack" and also "free speech" and "shut up, bitch."*

May 9: Comedian/activist/radio host/lady I know a little bit in real life Molly Knefel observed the nasty aftermath and wrote her own piece for Salon in response. Molly points out that male comedians sometimes do stop joking around and make serious social statements. She used the example of Patton Oswalt, who spoke out after the Boston Marathon bombing to much adulation, but defended DoucheBro-in-Chief Daniel Tosh's rights to make uncriticized rape threats (jokes?) at a show last year. Molly expressed disappointment that he and other comedians with a high profile don't feel the need to condemn the sadly endemic violence against women in our society in the same types of ways. Salon played up the Patton Oswalt angle, and some of his fans (among others) decided that instead of reading her article as lamenting a culture that values certain lives over others, that openly condemns certain types of violence while ignoring (at best) and trivializing violence against women, they assumed she was trying to trash Patton just to get attention. Hahaha, obviously.

May 10: The incomparable Lindy West then jumped into the fray with "An Open Letter to White Male Comedians." She contends, "I have more experience doing comedy than you have being a woman." She shuts down various arguments about feminists trying to "silence" male comedians or about how "it's just a joke." Guess what? It's not a joke to a lot of people, particularly women. And telling someone to shut up because they said they don't like your jokes is the actual definition of silencing, so nice try. Anyway, all the good things are there. (Also, see her post-Tosh guide "How to Make a Rape Joke." You can! But either avoid be a dick to survivors while doing so or just admit you're cheering on rapists!)

June 4: After continuing the conversation on Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell on FX with comedian Jim Norton,  Lindy received a whole new slew of dudely outrage. In a video (where she reads offending tweets aloud) and post a Jezebel, she asks, "If comedy has no lady problem, why am I getting so many rape threats?" Though here we can see they are all hilarious jokes/trenchant social commentary meant to subvert the dominant paradigm. Haha just kidding!** They are clear silencing tactics.

There are lots of other people writing important shit about this, too! Because SRSLY, if you are not a rapist, why would you want to identify with rapists? Rapists are not cool.

This is all a prelude to what's really important, which are my thoughts and feelings. Guys, as an aspiring comedy-type-person, I do sometimes get an icky feeling in my stomach about stand-up comedy/Comedy Central/comedy "communities."  I did that thing once! Stand-up at an open mic! In Bowling Green. Not exactly a hotbed of comedic geniuses (or progressive politics, for that matter), mostly just about a dozen or so young white dudes writing terrible jokes about ex-girlfriends for each other. (#sorrynotsorry #truth) Up to this point, I had actively avoided my regular bar on comedy nights, having been pissed off before while trying to innocently get my drink on--and that's mostly when the professional touring comics were performing. But somebody I know thought the open mic night needed some feminist infusion, and I agreed to put together a five minute set in solidarity with a few others who wanted to infiltrate the thick douchery. I think it went pretty well! I only had to shut down one dude's creepy comedy "virgin" joke when I signed up. However: I spent the rest of the night after my set watching dude after dude tell awful "jokes" about how women are irrational and dumb and slutty and have icky bodies and also why won't any of them date him? But not fatties, no, no fatties. Also, racist stereotypes are super funny! Also, this gem: "One time I berated a random woman on a dating website, here let me read my messages to you off of my phone verbatim, no seriously this is the 'joke,' that she's a fake bitch whose profile I looked at and she doesn't like hearing about it and I am incapable of recognizing that I am actually a terrible (unfunny) person really proud of harassing strange women online!" I don't recall any straight-up rape jokes, so that's a victory, maybe?

I know this is one spot on one night in one shitty little college town that can't be seen as representative of all women's experiences with various local comedy scenes, but I walked away largely demoralized. I never wanted to go back. I felt the other comedians were hostile to women/basic human decency. Who would want to network with them? I got busy with my PhD program and teaching, so I didn't ever make it to any other clubs in Toledo or anything to try again. And while I'm on the fence about whether stand-up is really my medium (should probably do it more than once),*** nobody wants to go somewhere that's supposed to be fun knowing they will probably be uncomfortable and/or offended at least part of the time. Why would I want to break into a "scene" that's hostile to my presence? I suppose I'm lucky(?) to not be a survivor of sexual violence, but it's not just rape victims who think it's uncool to make fun of rape victims. You want to make fun of rapists--without resorting to jokes about them being raped themselves in prison? Go for it. But if your joke is, "I am a dude and I raped a lady, aren't I edgy?" that is not a joke, that is not subversive, that is just you contributing to rape culture. Seriously, it's science.

And if one more article declares some kind of "inherent" conflict between feminists and comedians, I'll cut a (non-gender-specific) bitch. I think any of the writers I cited above would be surprised to find that you can only be one or the other.

*This is the only kind of speech that is freely allowed.
**This is called "verbal irony," son.
***I am enjoying doing improv stuff right now! Just because there are often more dudes doing it, doesn't mean it has to be unfriendly to women! I've also got a number of friends from my classes doing stand-up here in the Twin Cities, I should probably go see them/try it myself again and then I can decide which places might need to be avoided for my sanity.

Things that are amusing me today

As I continue to rework the same cover letter to fit numerous nonprofit job descriptions and drinking unnecessary energy drinks (Just kidding! No such thing!) in my campus office I don't think I'm technically supposed to have keys to anymore, I mostly spend my time reading the internet. Some things that have brought me joy today that I should probably stop glutting my Facebook feed with and just post links on the fucking blog I started for these types of purposes:

-This nun's 2006 book on sexual ethics has recently rocketed up bestseller lists because the Vatican suddenly realized it doesn't like her encouraging people to have solo sex and not hate gay people. Way to go, Vatican. Way to go. (WaPo)

-Married "recovering" alcoholic AND Christian actor Brian Presley drunkenly hits on the wrong lady on an airplane. (This is hilarious if you don't think too hard about how sad it is.) (Buzzfeed via The Gloss)

-Internet Boyfriend #1 Josh Fruhlinger once again demonstrates some sexy history (and linguistics!) nerd knowledge in his takedown of today's Hagar the Horrible comic. (The Comics Curmudgeon)

-Josh is also spearheading silly shenanigans over at Wonkette, like an "I'm With Mitt" photo contest.

Ways in Which the World May End: An Apocalpytic Vlog

Recently, via Crooks and Liars, I found out that Stephen Colbert found out from crazy Glenn Beck that the world is probably ending pretty soon. And so Stephen built a Doom Bunker. Which is awesome. So Isaac and I got drunk and built an apocalyptic hobo fort, which has less fancy lighting and fog machines, but is slightly more realistic when you consider the resources most of us will have on hand in the event that we survive the apocalypse.

Pow!

Hey gang, So I've been kind of busy "doing work" to prepare for a presentation today and get some shit done before I head off to the MSP for a visit later this week (!). But the internet does not stop creating magic just because I am busy and/or lazy. Here are a few things I have come upon recently: 1. Young Joseph Stalin was a fucking hottie:
Yow! Am I right or am I right?

2. Via Feministing, Rachel Maddow continues to rock my socks and or knock them off or whatever is the best thing that can happen to ones socks. Also, she makes fun of Sarah Palin. 'Cause that never gets old.

3. Have you yet watched Demon Ride? 'Cause you should watch it now/again:

The most terrifying ride of your life

Hey gang, today I'm going to see Joe Biden on campus! God there is a greatness to living in a swing state and going to a large public university. Usually not (as evidenced by all the douchebag/slutty*/drunken undergrads out for Halloween last night), but getting to see both VP candidates in one week for free is pretty great. And all I have to do is ride my bike over to campus. ANYWAY: Some of my dear funny friends of Omega Wolf fame back in Minnesota have made a fantastic video called "Demon Ride." Watch it. Rate it 12 stars. Tell your friends. Love. It. *Clarification: I support people's right to participate in slutty behavior without judgement. I do not support Slutoween. Mmkay?

Excuses, John McCain's "Dick Fingers", and Disney Villainry Link

My tragically full schedule of last-minute homeworking, going to class, and then napping all day before partying is, frankly, punishing, and I haven't had time to appropriately recap the Lady Maverick party yesterday or do the Thursday U.S. History post (or finish my 2-part series on Mormons and the gays--eek!). Thank god for weekly 3-day weekends for catch-up, amiright? With an acknowledgement of the the heads up from the ladyblogs Feministing and Feministe, I hereby repost Daily Show fabulousness starring Samantha Bee and John McCain's "dick fingers." Remember women's "health"? Hahaha. Also, a tipoff from my newly be-lawyered friend Alison led me to this fine "opinion piece" by America's next First Grinch Lady, Cindy McCain.

Friday: Frigg's Day*

After a long day filled with an extraneous work lunch, the somewhat-unintentional burning of some personal bridges, and what I will admit was a half-assed Presidential post yesterday,** I was so ready to have some fun at our trivia night last night. Anne and I were so pleased that our trivia mentors/heroes, Chuck and Sean came out to play and didn't even berate us for stealing 75% of their format. Also, Anne made people do a relay race physical challenge for bonus points that I must say has been one of the more successful activities we've done. Favorite category of the night: Childhood Diseases. Anne wouldn't let me ask questions about leukemia, though, because apparently she thought that might be triggering for some people. That might be true if I were like, "This kind of cancer kills innocent little kids by attacking their adorable baby blood and bone marrow and they slowly waste away in a hospital bed while their peers enjoy playing outside, going to school with their friends, and not having terminal illnesses." But I totally wasn't going to write it like that. Oh, well. Used mumps instead. But enough about me,*** I've got some good links for this Friday. And none of them are about rape, so hooray! -One of my blogging heroes and comics critic extraordinaire, Joshua Fruhlinger, recently appeared as a contestant on the classic TV game show Jeopardy! I knew he was going to be on, so I ducked out a little early on Tuesday to try and catch some action, but I only got home in time to see the credits, and they kept focusing on the other guy, so I assumed (correctly) that he was the champion. Now Josh has given his many well-wishers an awesome and detailed account of his experience doing the show. A salute to enthusiastic nerdery! Also, he gets extra points for referencing a Weird Al song (see classic video below). I lost on Jeopardy. (The Comics Curmudgeon) -You know, in the past few years, I've become a bit of a Kathy Griffin fan. Maybe it's her "meanness," maybe it's her status as a gay icon, I don't know, but either she's getting funnier, or I'm getting better at appreciating bitchiness. Maybe both. Kathy G recently wrote an ode to Kathy Griffin and praised her for "keeping shit real." Seriously. Nobody knows how to mock the cool kids quite like Kathy Griffin. She's totally invited to sit at the nerdy overachiever/as-of-yet closeted gay boys' table in the lunch room where my friends and I sat.**** Dame of the Day: Kathy Griffin. (The G Spot) -So: Jezebel. I read it. I really do love it. I don't necessarily go there for the hardest-hitting, most in-depth feminist analysis of current events, but I do go there for their smart, sassy smackdowns of pop culture and snarky commentary on whatever they fucking feel like writing about that day. Anyway, a particular post by SadieStein caught my attention, as it was about Facebook. I have a Facebook problem. Obvs. Anyway, check out a funny look at Facebooked: The Art of Choosing a Picture. (Jezebel) Oh, and: X-FILES MOVIE TONIGHT, BITCHEZ! Can't wait. *Frigg, eventually associated with Venus. **Come on, though, did I really need to rehash all the antebellum politics? You guys know what happened, and if you don't, you can come over and read the appropriate chapters in the copy of The American Pageant I keep in my living room. Yes. I do. ***Haha. This is a blog. My blog. There's NEVER enough about me. That's why you read it, isn't it? Come on. ****This is a metaphorical table, because once I hit high school, I stopped eating in the cafeteria, and my friends and I left campus every day as soon as we were allowed to junior year. But you get what I'm saying, right?

Quote o' the Day & Mini-Movie Review: PCU

Jeff Fecke on the idea that feminists should consult Catholic priests for relationship advice:
Oh, Jesus. Yes, what feminism needs is a man’s perspective on what women need. That’s exactly what feminism is about! That, and looking for awesome shoes. Chicks love shoes.
Well, if we're talking about The SEXY GAY Jesus, then he totally has something to contribute. Also, he knows where to find the best shoes.* FACT: I have way too many shoes. FACT: The Lesbo-Feminist Gestapo lets you keep your Feminist Card if you have more than just a pair of birkenstocks and some combat boots these days. Just don't overdo it, okay? BTW, I saw 1994's cult classic/stoner/college movie PCU over the weekend, and actually quite enjoyed it. There may have been a few mitigating factors. Namely: a) being in a slightly altered state of mind, also b) I am a sucker for the Jeremy Piven, even in his prematurely-balding, obviously-way-too-old-for-college state. But anyway, I quite enjoyed the "PC" stereotypes, what with having gone to a small liberal arts college and all. The Womynists cracked me up, as did the stoner/frisbee kids, the protester kids, but especially the underground fraternity, led by a young David Spade. This role was built for everybody's favorite whiny comedian who looks like he's twelve years old. It is unfortunate that he continued to play this exact same role for the next ten years in everything he's ever been in. But this was perfect for him. Anyway, you should check it out some time. I think the stereotypes poke fun without insulting, which is an important distinction to draw. It's obviously more of a "guys'" movie, but that's kind of how (non-romantic) comedies tend to skew (unfortunately). (Just felt like I should put one more thing in parentheses.) *ANECDOTE: A dear friend of mine who didn't come out to many of us until our senior year of college spent the summer after freshman year selling women's shoes at Nordstrom and claiming that his long-distance significant other was a woman (so not the case). It was ridiculous at the time, and even funnier in retrospect. But damn, was he good at selling shoes!

I am so just as funny as Jon Stewart

Via HuffPo, I get to see Jon Stewart using the same exaggerated German accent I announced "Vulf Blitzah!" with every 15 minutes to try and get through the 2004 Presidential Election returns on CNN without crying.* Here, you try saying "Wolf Blitzer" without a ridiculous accent. Can't do it, can you? Too much fun. Also, he talks about that New Yorker cover nonsense. *Has it actually been that long since I started caring about politics? Vulf Blitzah!

Monday's random tidbits of magic

Another energy drink propping my head up this afternoon. I've been kind of on a hedonistic bender these past few weeks, so my weekends aren't really all that restful, and what with me being an insomniac who compulsively does word puzzles in bed every night, I don't really get to sleep at a decent hour and I am ALWAYS TIRED. One day I will have babies and I will not be able to breastfeed because I will be afraid of passing on the massive amounts of taurine (yum!) I will need to keep me awake because they are crying all night for me to feed them. A vicious, vicious cycle. I would probably also have to quit drinking every night. Perhaps someone like me should not reproduce. -In honor of re-watching my copy of Wandy Sykes' Sick and Tired with my Pal N yesterday, here is a magical clip: I must give credit to Feministing, where I first saw this and was inspired to financially support the Wanda by buying her DVD. N and I had to first go for an energy drink run before we could sit and watch something for an hour and a half, despite the hilarity: I was hungover, and her new kitties had kept her awake all night. Energy drinks only cut your life expectancy in half for every 12 of them you drink every three days or so, right? -My Best TV Friend Forever (BTVFF) Ka$h likes to do about three main things with the newspaper: 1. Pick out the most horrifying stories she can find (you know, the ones I avoid by only looking at the "Living" section) and reading the depressing/gruesome details to me despite my vocal objections. 2. Discuss with me how much we hate today's Pluggers and/or Pajama Diaries. 3. Go to the "Wisconsin news" section, and find the stories that make our neighbors to the east look the worst, and then read the stories to our Wisconsinite roommates in an attempt to shame and humiliate them. Well, I got caught up on QuizLaw today, and saw they had updated everybody on our favorite recent-ish story from Wisconsin: NECROPHILIACS HUZZAH! The ones who dug up the dead girl, not any of the ones who killed deers to fuck. Still, though: Wisconsin: Land of America's Truest Values. Like bars every 15 feet. And creepy sexual fetishes. -And on that note: I sat around a "camp" (in a backyard firepit thingy) fire over the weekend and we made s'mores. Hooray! Of course, when retrieving my jeans from the floor the next morning, I realized that a) that spot on the floor was exactly where I had spilled my re-hydration water glass at some point during the night and b) I had gotten melted marshmallow all over the left leg. Then I proceeded to wear these pants into public. People with hangovers have no need for you and your middle-class "cleanliness" standards. Nope, not when there is bacon to be consumed.

Quote o' the Day

The amazing Kenny Blogginz strikes again:
I couldn't help but notice how much you people hate America. I don't know why. It's obviously the best country. I suppose you all just want to move to France and eat snails off the genitals of your same-sex partners while surrendering to Islamofascism!?
He's got us pegged, kids! Who leaked the Agenda?

Quote o' the Day WITH VIDEO

"You never see a rabbi on TV interpreting the New Testament, DO YOU?" -Lewis Black on how the Old Testament is the JEWS' book (~5:45-5:10) Via Pharyngula.
